3 REASONS WHY WE USE SWEET POTATO IN OUR FOOD

Published date: 12 October 2023

The weather finally seems to be turning a corner, with a chill in the air and leaves on the ground.

As we descend into the beautiful season of autumn, it is the perfect time to sing our praises for the wonderful vegetable that is the Sweet Potato.

All our Fresh Pressed™️ foods are 100% grain free and use Sweet Potato. Despite their similar names, Sweet Potatoes are not related to White Potatoes. They instead belong to an entirely different plant family and are utilised for their health benefits and taste in both human and pet food.

Here are 3 reasons why we LOVE this diverse and delicious root vegetable.

1) Sweet Potato Supports Digestive Health

Sweet Potatoes are fantastic for bowel health. These red root vegetables are easy to digest and are packed with both soluble and insoluble fibres.

Fibre supports proper stool formation and helps to push food through dogs’ digestive systems. Ensuring regular stools and a healthy happy bowel!

Utilising a food with a digestible carbohydrate like Sweet Potato, will benefit owners as well as dogs. Remember the less digestible the diet the more poop you are likely to have to deal with…

2) Sweet Potato Provides Slow-Release Energy

There can certainly be some confusion around the use of carbohydrates in dog diets. With some believing that carbohydrates should be avoided in our dogs’ dinners…

In fact, carbohydrates play an essential role in any dog diet. They are needed to provide energy, fibre and an essential source of vitamins and minerals.

The key thing to consider is the quality of the carbohydrate within the food. Sweet Potato is an exceptionally high-quality carbohydrate source, that provides digestible slow-release energy to our canine companions.

Sweet Potato sits low on the Glycaemic Index, which is an index that measures the effects of different carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. This means that Sweet Potato breaks down slowly and releases glucose (sugar) into the blood stream gradually.

Ultimately leading to healthier blood sugar levels and a much steadier and consistent stream of energy across the day.

3) Sweet Potato Supports Eye Health!

Did you know that carrots help you to see in the dark?

Most of us probably encountered this idea when we were children, likely when we were being reluctant to eat our vegetables. Whilst it isn’t strictly true that eating lots of carrots will give you night vision, there is truth to certain vegetables being beneficial to eye health.

One of these vegetables of course is the humble Sweet Potato.

A natural antioxidant called Beta-Carotene is responsible for the bright orange flesh seen in Sweet Potatoes. When eaten, Beta-Carotene converts to Vitamin A which is needed for eye support. It is used to form light detecting receptors within our dogs’ eyes and to maintain the overall health of the eye.

Alongside providing a beneficial dose of Vitamin A for eye health, super sweet potatoes are also a fabulous source of Vitamin C and B6. These support the immune system and aid with brain development.

We hope you get to enjoy some Sweet Potato dishes of your own during the colder weather.
